Multiple cloud-to-ground and cloud-to-cloud lightning strokes are observed during a night-time thunderstorm. Lightning is caused by turbulent winds inside a cloud causing electric charges to build up as ice and water droplets circulate and rub together. When the strength of the charge overcomes the insulating properties of the atmosphere, lightning discharges inside the cloud, to another cloud, or to the ground.
