BLACKOUT! Solar storms and their effect on planet Earth

The video takes a journey from the Sun to the Earth as eruptions known as solar storms travel to Earth and affect our lives in ways we still don't completely understand. This video was produced and written by a teacher for the purpose of illustrating concepts too difficult to visualize for the typical middle school student. The concepts of Coronal Mass Ejections (CME's), flares, and solar wind are explained to help students learn more about these phenomena.

Glacier Bay, Alaska from the Ground, Air & Space

A look at how satellite data can be used to measure glacier changes from space, and how remote sensing can extend the records of historical ground-based measurements to the present. This video also examines how results from ground and satellite measurements can be integrated to yield information that may be used in analyzing a regional climate.

Goes - 8

Overview of the 1995 launch and success of GOES-8 (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite). It has great pictures and information on how the satellite was built and launched and how it revolutionized weather forecasting by its constant view of the western hemisphere. This video also includes a 3 minute video demonstrating the meteorological applications of the GOES-8 data.

High Energy Vision: The Chandra X-Ray Observatory

Narrated by Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek's Uhura), the tape explores the physics of x-ray telescopes and how Chandra came to be the most sophisticated X-ray telescope ever built. Launched from the Columbia space shuttle in 1999, the telescope is capable of viewing the hottest places in the universe in x-ray light. The photos of black holes and new born stars are extraordinary.

Hubble, The First Decade

Covers the first 10 years of the Hubble camera and the now-famous photos taken in space. Includes graphic depictions and interviews.

Age Group: Adults Length: 8 Min 40 Sec

Images of Earth and Space II

This video uses computer simulations to "tour" the solar system and outer space. At the Sun, simulations investigate processes that create magnetic fields and release energetic particles. A visit at Earth begins with the Pacific Ocean, studying the 1997-98 El Nino and cyclone Susan. Crossing the globe, visualizations trace North America's East Coast and ocean currents through the North Atlantic. Night light from the human cities then shows human impact. Next, two models probe nearby space phenomena, fluid behavior in micro-gravity conditions, and an asteroid collison. A jaunt to Mars explores the mountains and trenches of it's dry, rocky surface. And concludes at a binary neutron star system, where 2 city-sized objects with the sun's mass merge in a huge explosion.

Infrared - More Than Your Eyes Can See

Dr. Michelle Thaller, a Caltech astrophysicist, explains the world of infrared light.

Age Group: 7 to Adult Length: 7 Min

Jason, An Ocean Odyssey

JASON is an oceanography mission focusing on monitoring global ocean circulation, discovering the tie between the oceans and atmosphere, improving climate predictions, and monitoring events such as El Niņo conditions and ocean eddies. The Jason-1 satellite carries a radar altimeter, and it is a follow-on mission to the highly successful TOPEX/Poseidon mission. It is a joint mission between France and the U.S.A. The satellite was launched December 2001. Video includes live footage of oceans and cloud formations, with graphics, animations, and interviews.

Journey to a Blackhole

This video explains NASA's four planned missions; LISA, GLAST, Constellation-X, and ARISE, that will explore the universe's largest Black Hole. Although the explanations of the capabilities of each spacecraft are complete and easy to understand, the science discussion is meant for High School and above.

Journey to the Planets and Beyond

Interviews with engineers and scientists regarding planets, comets, and asteroids in the universe.

Age Group: Middle School to Adult Length: 1 hr

Passport to Knowledge Program 1: Live From a Black Hole

The Chandra X-ray Observatory, launched in 1999, has played a big role in the study of black holes. Although Chandra's Observations have not been limited to black holes, the tape focuses on what a black hole is, how they are made, and how Chandra has been able to make these wondrous discoveries about them.

Ulysses: An Expedition Over the Sun's Poles

The Ulysses spacecraft, launched in 1990 made some fascinating discoveries as it flew over the Sun's poles. The main objective of this mission was to compare the particles and fields above the Sun's poles with those found near it's equator. This program discusses the new information learned about solar wind, cosmic rays, and magnetic fields.

Underground Railroad: Connections to Freedom and Science

Slaves traveling the Underground Railroad, usually on foot, depended on celestial navigation to find their way northward. They continually looked to the Big Dipper and the North Star for direction. The purpose of this video is to increase student awareness of the Underground Railroad and the role celestial navigation played in the Railroad's success. The video also highlights the importance of modern Global Information System technology in reconstructing historical topographies and finding the exact route of the Railroad. By combining amazing historical facts-such as the use of handmade quilts for communication with mathematics, remote-sensing technology, earth system science, and astronomy, the video presents an educational experience that is dynamic, moving and broadly cross curricular
